Zotero storage options

A simple Zotero storage alternative for attachment-heavy libraries

Zotero gives every account 300 MB of free file storage. If your personal library contains more PDFs than that, WebDAV lets Zotero keep syncing your library data normally while storing the attachment files with another provider.

What counts toward Zotero storage?

Zotero's online file quota applies to synced attachment files such as PDFs and snapshots. Your library metadata can still sync without using that file quota, and local files on your computer are not limited by the 300 MB online allowance.

Current individual storage options

Zotero's published individual pricing currently offers 300 MB free, 2 GB for $20/year, 6 GB for $60/year, and unlimited file storage for $120/year. Refory is designed for people who want a large personal attachment library without operating their own WebDAV server.

Only need extra attachment storage for a semester or thesis? See the planned six-month Refory option. It is open to everyone and does not require student verification.

When WebDAV is the right choice

  • You mainly need to sync PDFs and other attachments in My Library.
  • You want the normal Zotero apps to keep handling your library rather than moving files into a custom plugin workflow.
  • You want more storage without maintaining a WebDAV server yourself.

Important limitation

WebDAV is for attachment files in your personal Zotero library. Zotero group libraries use Zotero Storage for file syncing. Refory does not replace Zotero's metadata sync and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Zotero.

Why Refory?

Refory is purpose-built for Zotero's WebDAV protocol instead of being a general cloud drive with WebDAV added on. Paid plans provide 50 GB per account, EU-hosted primary storage, immutable version history, and 30-day file recovery. Zotero connects directly using its built-in WebDAV settings; there is no plugin to install.

If supporting Zotero directly or syncing group-library attachments matters most to you, official Zotero Storage is the better choice. If your problem is simply that a large personal PDF library has outgrown the standard quota, Refory is built for that narrower job.
